A sunset clause (also known as tail) is a provision in claims-made liability insurance policy which states that the insurer will respond only to losses reported before some predetermined future date (sunset), usually a set period after the expiration of the policy.
The incident should occur during the period of the policy and the claim should be made before the sunset clause period ends.
Usually this clause is set for construction projects and motor insurance.
