I’m in the final year of my graduation in Economics. I’ll be giving my final examinations in May next year, which will mark the start of my Job Hunt. I’ve cleared CT1,CT5, CT3 and CB1. I want to start my preparation for the job from now itself and start acquiring the skills. I’ll be taking CS2 in April. I know intermediate Excel but I’m not very fast at it as I’ve not done any projects or anything close to practical work.

Things I want an answer to-

      1. What are the must have skills or knowledge to land in a Job except Excel, Industry Knowledge and knowledge of Actuarial Exams?

      2. What are the skills that would come under “good to have”?

      3. How relevant are Ms Access, VBA and SQL to the industry?

      4. How can I become more acquainted to Excel, are there any projects or something?

      5. How important are Communication Skills and where should they lie in my priority list?

I would be glad if all my questions are answered in points. Thanks in advance.

        Thanks Shivang for the message

Here are the answers for your questions.

Things I want an answer to-

        1. What are the must have skills or knowledge to land in a Job except Excel, Industry Knowledge and knowledge of Actuarial Exams?

The three things you said are the most important, now what’s left is conversation and expressing what you know in a proper manner and confidence.

        2. What are the skills that would come under “good to have”?

Are you talking about writing on CV or after job? Good to have should be real if on the CV. There is no point to lie.

        3. How relevant are Ms Access, VBA and SQL to the industry?

You need to learn any one language in a brilliant manner. Almost no one have practical knowledge when they land the job so go with Excel VBA and learn basics about SQL. Ms Access, haven’t seen much.

        4. How can I become more acquainted to Excel, are there any projects or something?

There are projects in https://theactuarialclub.com/projects/ and exercises on Excel are here – https://forum.theactuarialclub.com/excel-f10/

        5. How important are Communication Skills and where should they lie in my priority list?

Yes, that should be on number 2. First should be knowledge.
